Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has always been an important value at Brooks Macdonald. We take very seriously our responsibility to our clients, employees and shareholders to build a strong, profitable and conscientious business. We also believe that we hold a wider responsibility towards each other and towards the natural environment.

Our vision

We want to make a positive difference through the services we provide, the way we provide them, and the way we run the Group. We aspire to go above and beyond to create a brighter future that will benefit employees, clients, shareholders and the wider environment for current and future generations.

A better way of doing business

The importance we place on CSR shapes how we run our business. We implement various policies, procedures and processes to ensure that we act as a responsible business.

United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment

The United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) is recognised as the leading global network for investors committed to integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into their investment practices.

Brooks Macdonald is proud to be a signatory to the United Nations PRI. Adhering to the PRI is an important and positive step forward in our company wide ESG efforts. As a PRI signatory, we include ESG criteria within our investment processes, supporting our ambitions to further promote responsible investment practices.

Corporate governance

Or policies educate everyone on how to work in a compliant and responsible way. For good governance practice there are four essential elements: transparency, accountability, stewardship and integrity.

The Group follows the 2018 UK Corporate Governance Code. Our governance starts with our Board and defines our relationships with our stakeholders. Their decisions trickle down through the entire Group and generate best practice, culture and ethics from the boardroom and beyond. We partner with a leading corporate governance provider to assist with our proxy voting for client assets and engage with companies directly where we have a significant shareholding.

What we believe

Guiding principles

We are a values-driven organisation. Our values – or guiding principles – have been a major force in shaping us. They define our long-term strategy and the way we serve our clients daily.

Vulnerable clients

We have a responsibility to our most vulnerable clients to ensure they are supported to make the best decisions, no matter their circumstances.

According to recent statistics, the number of vulnerable consumers in the UK now stands at 27.7 million. We have a passionate and knowledgeable vulnerable client team who ensure that we, as a Group, are always improving our offering and doing what we can to give vulnerable clients, and those that support them, all the assistance they need.

We want to have a positive impact in the communities we are part of and empower our people to give back to their communities. We are involved in charitable activities both at corporate, office and individual level.

The BM Foundation

The BM Foundation

The BM Foundation couldn’t exist without the generosity of the people working at Brooks Macdonald. The number one source of funding is from employees.

The BM Foundation has donated just over £346,750 to a host of charities in the UK and worldwide. The committee considers every request, whether from employees looking to support specific charities, or requests from charities themselves. We also work closely with a selection of key charity partners, funding specific projects with larger contributions.

Volunteering days

Volunteering days

We support giving back to the causes that are important to our people.

The Group introduced volunteering days in 2019. Volunteering gives everyone the chance to build connections with their local communities and give back to society. For example, our Guernsey office recently took a volunteer day to partake in biodiversity research at their local beach Belgrave Bay.

We recognise that our business relies on the commitment of our people and we strive to be a responsible employer. We work with a number of external partners as we continue to focus on:

  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Employee wellbeing
  • Learning and development
Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion

We’re committed to nurturing an inclusive culture that values a balanced and diverse workforce. We have a number of actions and initiatives to support this.

For example, we provide school leaver and graduate trainee programmes through our partnership with Investment 20/20, many of whom have stayed on with us to work fulltime. This has opened the door for us to welcome young and diverse talent into the Group.

Additionally, we have launched enhanced maternity, paternity and shared parental leave policies to help support new parents.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing

We strive to be a responsible employer with a strong focus on employee wellbeing.

We organise regular wellbeing activities, from gym classes to mindfulness sessions. Each of our offices has a contemplation room so people can step away from their desk to pray, meditate or simply take some time to themselves.

Learning and development

Learning and development

We offer several opportunities for all employees to take control of their own career and development.

We provide a wealth of online material that supports personal development. We invest in training, qualifications and development as part of our strategy to nurture our people’s growth and retain talented employees. We recognise the value of ongoing development outside of work. We provide everyone with a personal development budget that can be used for any instructor led, non-work related course each calendar year.

We believe that businesses are accountable for achieving good environmental practice and for working in a sustainable manner. We are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Workplace

Workplace

We have designed all our workplaces for our people.

They are designed to be flexible, diverse and supportive of different working styles. We consider the wellbeing of everyone who enters our offices, that’s why each workspace includes contemplation rooms, biophilic design, collaboration spaces and places to relax.

Our Manchester office has moved to a BREEAM outstanding certified building, BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings.

Sustainability/carbon footprint

Sustainability/carbon footprint

We are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

We are in the early stages of our own sustainability journey, but we have already made meaningful steps by:

  • Putting recycling points in all our offices
  • Keeping single use products to a minimum
  • Reducing our paper usage and encouraging our people to ‘go digital’
  • Actively sourcing products that are Fairtrade or locally produced
  • Upcycling furniture when moving offices to avoid unnecessary waste
  • Working with suppliers focussed on sustainability
  • Providing a cycle to work scheme for those who wish to travel to work by bike
  • Purchasing only renewable energy.
